Pre-GCoMM Seminar

Q: When should I arrive if I want to attend the pre-event seminar?
A: This seminar will run 9-5 on Tuesday the 11th – so you might want to arrive the 10th in order to get settled.

Q: What is the seminar about?
A:  The pre-event seminar is called Heart Musics in Missions.  Click
here for details.

Q:  How much does the pre-event seminar cost?
A:  $65 for the one-day non-credit course.  To take the course for graduate credit from Bethel University, write to
j-benham@bethel.org.

Q:  Are there other courses offered by Bethel University before and after GCoMM?
A:  Yes, Bethel’s graduate program in
ethnomusicology offers on-campus classes all summer and online classes during the winter and spring.

GCoMM 2006

Registration & Discounts

Q:  What are the costs for GCoMM?
A:  The basic cost will be $245 for "early bird registration" (available until April 1) which includes 12 meals for the four days of GCoMM.  There is a discounted student/international registration rate of only $200 (see details below).  In addition to registration, housing on the Bethel campus will be $25 per night.

Q:  What if I don’t register in time to get the early bird rate?
A:  Regular registration runs April 2 – June 15 and costs $275.  Late registration runs June 16-July 10 and costs $300 (no group discounts available during late registration).  Daily and/or walk-in rates are $65 per day, but does not include food like normal full-conference rates do.

Q:  Who qualifies for student or international registration rates?
A:  Students will need to bring their student photo ID to confirm their student status.  “International” registration is for people coming to GCoMM from outside North America.  Citizenship is not an issue; this extremely low rate is to help those who had to spend significant money on plane tickets just to get to America.  We want to make GCoMM affordable for all!

Q:  What if my school doesn’t provide student photo ID’s?
A:  Please provide a letter from your school's registrar verifying that you are registered for classes during the Spring semester of 2006.

Q:  Are there any group discounts available?
A:  GCoMM is offering group discounts for members of sponsor organizations, so if you can persuade your organization to
sponsor GCoMM 2006, a certain number of people in your organization will get 10% off on registration.

One of our sponsors, the International Council of Ethnodoxologists (ICE) is offering this discount to new members as well.  Click here for more information.

Online Registration

Q:  What will I need to know when I fill out the registration online?
A:  Besides the normal personal info, you’ll want to have considered the following:

  • -     Do I want to attend the pre-event seminar?

  • -     Which nights will I need housing on the Bethel campus, if any?

  • -     What roommate preferences do I have, if any?

  • -     How will I pay? (Have credit card ready, if that is your choice.)

  • -     Have I already made my flight arrangements? (Have arrival and departure information available, if you already have it. This info can also be entered later. See also the section on Travel below.)

  • -     Am I going to register more than one person? (If so, have their information ready, too.)

  • -     Is there a topic or question I would like to discuss in a small group setting?

Q:  What if I don’t have all the information I need to finish my registration right now?
A:  No problem! You can go back later and insert more information using your e-mail address and password... so your registration simply updates itself.  Cool, eh?  You can even change the amount you pay, so you might as well start that registration now, even if you have to finish it later.

Q: I’ve been online to enter some of my information, but I haven’t paid yet.  Now I’m trying to get back to my record by clicking the “Existing Registration” button, and my application can’t be found.  What can I do?
A: The system will view you as a new applicant until you’ve paid.  Click on “New Registration” and answer the next two questions exactly as you did the first time.  The system should then be able to find your record.

On Campus Housing

Q:  What housing arrangements are available?
A:  Air-conditioned on-campus housing is limited, so sign up now to reserve your spot.  Each suite has three bedrooms and sleeps six people (two per bedroom), so you can request roommates accordingly.  Spouses can request a room together.  When the air-conditioned rooms are full we will begin to fill up those without air-conditioning.

Q: Are linens and towels provided for on-campus housing?
A:
Yes. The linen pack is 2 flat sheets, 2 small bath towels, a washcloth, and a pillow case. There is also a pillow, mattress pad, and blanket in each room.

To see more information on the campus and surrounding area,
click here.   On-campus housing for GCoMM 2006 will be primarily in Heritage Hall, located right across the street from Benson Great Hall, where the plenary sessions will be held.

Q: Will conferees have access to the Internet while on campus?
A: Lounges and some other locations at Bethel have free Wi-Fi access. In on-campus dorm housing, each room has both an Ethernet connection and a phone jack which can be used to dial into the local phone system by programming your computer to use "9" before the local number. If the data port is used, there will need to be an Ethernet card in your computer.

Travel Arrangements

Q:  Where can I find directions to Bethel University and local area maps?
To see more information on the campus and surrounding area, click here.

Q:  When should I plan to arrive and leave?
A:  If you don’t plan to attend the pre-event seminar, registration begins for you on Tuesday the 11th from 1 to 5 PM. This is also the time to settle into your room. Supper is provided for you from 5 to 6 PM, and the GCoMM program begins at 6:45. You will want to arrive at the MSP (Minneapolis/St. Paul) airport by Tuesday afternoon, July 11th.
The conference ends on Saturday the 15th after lunch (12:30-1:30).

Q:  Do you have advice on getting cheap plane tickets?
A:  We can recommend Paul Sawatski with Menno Travel. A 30-day advance booking will get you a 10% discount, whereas under 30 days it drops to a 5 % discount. Call 800-635-2032, write
pauls@mennotravelservice.com or go online at www.mennotravelservice.com.  Tell Paul you want to use the "GCoMM Group Discount."
